Imagine saying you “enjoy” convalescence nowadays 🙈!! I think friends & family would think we’ve gone “off” a bit after our illness. We live in an “always on” world where taking time out often makes us feel guilty or weak. However the convalescent period - a time recuperate & heal after illness was both recognised & accepted as part & parcel of life by our grandparents.

My school Home Economics textbook has numerous recipes & care advice for convalescents (showing my age now 😅!) But taking care of ourselves after illness is now something of a lost art.

Convalescence, Long Covid, Post viral fatigue - whatever label you use, refers to that “grey area” between illness & wellness.

It can be frustrating for both sufferers and their loved ones when health fails to bounce back as rapidly as we’d like. But letting go of expectations & embracing the process can be the first step to recovery.

Yesterday I shared some self-care tips, so today here’s some very basic nutritional advice to help nurture yourself while you heal.

In a nutshell:

Eat nutritious, appealing foods while you are recovering.
.
Little & often is fine if you’re appetite isn’t great. It’s not uncommon to have poor appetite.
.
Stay hydrated - an electrolyte drink can be good for short term use if you are weak & dehydrated or you have diarrhoea/night sweats.
.
Nutritious smoothies & juices are another good option.
.
A broad spectrum multivitamin can be hugely helpful to increase appetite & energy - halving recovery time according to some studies.
.
Zinc can help with persistent loss of smell & taste for some.
.
Finally if you’d had antibiotics, a course of probiotics will get your gut back in order
